Happiness Amidst Adversity

Stories of Hope      2 min read

When we met Yohan, he asked: “How did the world began?” We were floored because we didn’t expect to be asked that question.

Yohan, a bright and curious young boy, was not unfamiliar to the sights and sounds of his parents arguing. Their fights were frequent and violent that they were often at the police station to settle their arguments. What should have been a safe, loving and supportive space – a family home – became a place of despair. But change was on the horizon.

Since participating in a World Vision workshop called Celebrating Families, Yohan’s parents learned how to effectively communicate with each other, and discovered the importance of building a loving home for their children. This transformed their relationship and family life.

Now, despite living in the midst of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, Yohan and his family found happiness. Due to the scarcity of jobs, they have to rely on paddy farming for their livelihood. However, hungry elephants posed a constant threat to their crops, so they spend their nights guarding their fields. But for Yohan and his family, it is something they enjoy doing together because it is then that they get to spend quality family time.

Yohan’s family is a shining example of resilience and transformation.

As Yohan continues to ask questions about the world, we are reminded that achieving happiness often begins with curiosity and the determination to make it a reality. Yohan’s drawing of his family being his world also shows us the importance of a happy family for children.
