Water is Freedom!

Vision News , march-2023      2 min read

As World Water Day approaches on 22 March, picture your everyday routine: you wake up, wash your face and brush your teeth. Your coffee is brewing as you hop in the shower. Then, you whip up breakfast and soon, you’re on your way to begin a productive day. Now think back for a minute – can you imagine getting ready for the day without water?

Not having clean water is a daily reality for children and families worldwide. And the way things are currently going, 1.6 billion people will lack safely managed drinking water, 2.8 billion people will lack safely managed sanitation, and 1.9 billion people will lack basic hand hygiene facilities in 2030.1

Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is a basic building block for well-being. It gives you the freedom to live healthily, complete your education and improve your livelihoods, among other things. That is why World Vision focuses on ensuring clean water, sanitation, and hygiene for every person in every community we work in, reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds.

Meet Mervedie from Bukanga Lonzo

Mervedie fetches water from the borehole, which is only 10 metres from her house.

Without access to safe water at home, 9-year-old Mervedie had to literally climb a mountain just to reach the Lonzo river, fetch water and wash. This caused her to get to school late and miss classes.

The Lonzo river has also claimed many children’s lives due to drowning. Mervedie almost became a drowning victim herself, but she was fortunately rescued by a nearby community member.

Through World Vision’s interventions, a borehole for clean water was drilled in her village. “I no longer have to walk to the river for water or attend school late, because the well is near my house. I am also safe from drowning because I can now wash and shower at home. Thank you, World Vision!”

There are still communities that need safe and manageable access to drinking water. The futures of so many people depend on it; water is freedom! By supporting World Vision and its work, you are supporting solutions that reach people with water faster and more efficiently.

As World Water Day approaches this 22 March, join us in giving vulnerable children access to clean and safe water, as well as the freedom to thrive!
