Worldwide, 844 million people lack access to drinking water, and 2.3 billion do not have access to latrines or other basic sanitation facilities.1
Without access to clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene facilities, children will continue the long walks for water which exposes them to dangerous animals and sexual violence. They will also face an increased risk of health issues.
Rivers, streams and other open water sources are susceptible to contamination from animals as well as unhygienic human activities, like open defecation. Unclean water causes diarrhoea and typhoid spread.
Without proper water pipelines, every day, children need to walk hours, sometimes multiple times a day, to collect heavy loads of water from the nearest water source.
Lack of hygiene awareness in rural areas causes infections and diseases to spread even more easily.
Access to water and sanitation facilities is not just a basic human right; it is also about creating the conditions for people to live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives. World Vision focuses on ensuring clean water and sanitation facilities are available to every person in the communities we work in.
Construct boreholes, water storage and distribution systems in the community.
Build latrines to protect people, water sources and the environment from faecal contamination.
Encourage the adoption of proper handwashing with soap to prevent the spread of diseases.
When you sponsor a child, your contribution goes beyond providing them with clean water and access to sanitation facilities; it provides them with education, nutritious food, a safe environment to grow up in, and sustainable livelihood for their family – all of which form the building blocks of a brighter future.
