The global poverty rate increased sharply from 8.3% in 2019 to 9.2% in 2020, rewinding progress by about three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing conflict, and natural disasters.1
The world's most vulnerable citizens are the furthest behind, who lack the means to propel themselves forward. They are often excluded from economic opportunities, and women are disproportionately affected.
Farmers cannot afford basic agricultural inputs, such as plant fertilisers and animal vaccines, to increase productivity. They may also lack the necessary knowledge to maintain or increase yields.
The vulnerable are often uneducated and lack the skills to find high-paying jobs. They also do not have basic financial skills and services, forcing them to pay high interest rates to moneylenders.
Natural disasters caused by climate change directly affect crop production and farmers' livelihoods, threaten farmers' sources of income, and lead them into poverty.
As livelihoods improve, parents can do more for their children — provide them with nutritious meals and ensure they continue their education. In time, this can elevate and transform an entire community.
Provide communities with livestock raising and crop planting training to improve production.
Provide skills and marketing trainings to improve their financial literacy and productivity, as well as community savings group which enables them to save money together and lend to each other when needs arise.
Educate communities on disaster risks and prepare them with the skills and knowledge needed to face the effects of emergencies.
When you sponsor a child, your contribution goes beyond providing their family with sustainable livelihood; it provides them with education, nutritious food, clean water, and a safe environment to grow up in – all of which form the building blocks of a brighter future.
