Sovannrath rings in the New Year with reading!

Stories from the Field      3 min read

As the clock ticks down to New Year’s Eve on 9 February, no doubt many of us are busy prepping and planning for the joyous season ahead. Here at World Vision, our thoughts at this time of year often drift towards the children in the communities we serve. Are they as excited as our children are to celebrate this important holiday?

In a small village in Rovieng, Cambodia, World Vision’s support has helped a boy named Sovannrath to ring in the New Year immersed in the world of reading. Here's his story...

Sovannrath with his family.

I’m Sovannrath. I’m nine years old, and I live with my mom, dad and big sister in a village in Rovieng district. My parents are both farmers.

Before, I always studied with my sister and friends under the orange tree at the corner of my house. But it was difficult to learn, especially during the rainy season. My house is close to the road, and there are a lot of cars and motorcycles travelling by, so I was afraid of traffic accidents. Sometimes I went to the farm with my parents, where I would end up playing in the river or catching little fish and crabs in the rice paddies.

Ever since World Vision helped set up a reading camp in his community, Sovannrath can read in comfort.

When World Vision worked together with the local authorities to set up a reading camp in my village, I was overjoyed! The camp has a lot of storybooks that I can read whenever I like. I can ask the teachers all sorts of questions and have plenty of friends to read with.

Nowadays, I rarely go to the fields with my parents because I love reading with my friends. Recently, my mom and dad installed a reading corner at home where my sister and I can study. My friend’s parents installed reading corners in their homes too. We sometimes borrow books from the reading camp, so our reading really has improved a lot.

Finally, I’d like to say that I am very grateful to World Vision for setting up the reading camp in the community and supporting us. I will continue to work towards my goal of becoming a teacher!

Sovannrath is a step closer towards reaching his goals. This is the power of You and Us! But there are still many other children around the world, waiting for you to help them realise their dreams.

To celebrate the coming of the New Year, we invite you to support World Vision’s ‘Angpow for Education’ campaign! You can bring the joy of the festive season to vulnerable children, families and communities far and wide by supporting local education programmes and giving children the opportunity to learn and grow.

If you’d like to walk alongside a child on their journey of growth, we encourage you to join the Child Sponsorship PLUS programme too. With your support, we can reach out and bring hope to even more children and families in need!

Their future begins with your decision to help!
